#101 Plastic surgeon, ENT surgeon, ophthalmologist

Just a quick note to say that any plastic surgeon, ENT surgeon or ophthalmologist could do amazing things here if they were inclined to do a short-term mission here.

We always have patients with ophthalmological issues (cataracts, retinoblastoma, periorbital cellulitis, orbital cellulitis, conjunctivitis, foreign bodies, etc). We could put advertisements out on the radio and sent out memos to all the health districts and get patients from all over.

We could also keep a plastic surgeon or ENT surgeon busy with cleft lips and cleft palates. We did one about a week ago. We’ve had several others come in, but we turn them away because they’re just too complicated for us. This is another situation where, if we just put the word out, they’d come in droves from all over.

Just an idea. Anybody out there know an ophthalmologist or ENT?

You will notice on our blog, missionarydoctors.blogspot.com, that we have a link for donations. This is through Adventist Health International’s website. We believe strongly in the mission of AHI. We feel that AHI is an organization worth supporting. By donating through AHI, you can be reassured that there is a strong measure of accountability following your donation. Just mark the donation for ‘Bere.’ And remember that your gift is 100% tax-deductible.

  1. I came upon your blog via Babycenter. My daughter will be seeing her ENT next week(the 30th) and I will pass along your blog information to him. I am not sure if he'd be interested or not but hopefully he'll pass it along to his fellow doctors if he is not. He is a great doc(at U of M in Ann Arbor, MI) Will be praying for you and your family and the wonderful work you are doing there.
    God Bless <><

  2. My friend Chuck Stewart is also friends with James and Sarah. He's ENT. Works at LLUMC along with my other friend Jared Inman. He was at SAU with us. Anyway, pretty sure both are like microvascular trauma specialists I think. They're both incredibly busy at LLUMC but maybe...

  3. Hi Olen and Danae,

I'm a doctor from the UK, about to start my ophthalmology training (I finished medical school 2 years ago, starting my 7 year ophth training next month - I think that's roughly equivalent to starting residency in the US?). A friend posted a link to your blog on facebook a few days ago, and I don't quite know why I started reading it as I don't know any of you guys, but anyway, I've read quite a bit of it since then and been pretty touched by what you've written.

For several years I've known that I want to do some medical work in the developing world, I spent 10 weeks on my elective in rural Uganda a couple of years ago, and loved it there despite the massive frustrations. Reading your blog has reminded me again how much I want to get back to Africa. I'm pretty sure I'm not the answer to your prayers for an ophthalmologist right now, as it'll be at least a couple of years before I'm competent to do much on my own, but maybe at some point in the future...?

Let me know if you think there might be some germ of a possibility there, I'll check back to this page to see if you've commented below and can send you an email if you want to discuss things further. I'm well aware this is a pretty insane comment to be writing on a stranger's blog ("hey strangers, maybe I could fly halfway round the world to join you in the middle of Tchad and do some surgery sometime in the next couple of years?") so please feel free to ignore me if you assume I'm some sort of crazy person! But, uh, yeah, I'm not sure what else to say so I guess I'll just throw the idea out there. Maybe hear from you sometime soon?

    Abi
